"The first time I laid my eyes on Ysalais, she was 15 years old and timid. We found her on our way to subdue a conflict between two of the most powerful clans under my rule. One of the priests that accompanied me discovered that a girl in the small town between the warring clans could read the symbols that ran across the sleeves of his robe - The Old Scripts.
She was young and frightened, worried that by reading the scripts aloud she had warranted a kind of punishment from her queen. That was far from what I thought as I took her in that evening. She was a child and I only wondered how we would place the burden of several generations on her.
I made my decision and took her with me as I returned to my courts. When we showed her the first few reproductions of the Old Scripts, her timidity was gone. There was a spark of light in her eyes and when she told us the translations, I could understand why the texts gave her joy. It explained to us, in the most basic terms the knowledge we needed to make massive technological developments. Apparently, we had been under utilizing our natural resources. This knowledge gave us the advantage we needed to push back the Demon Father's horde significantly. That was our pressing need at the time so it was enough.
The years went by and although we have enjoyed massive leaps in technology and relative peace through Ysalais' decryptions, the threat remains. So I was more specific in my demands from her: we needed a way to remove the Demon Father from our world, didn't the texts say something about this? She has been evasive in answering this question, always diverting with one more "discovery" or the other.
I fear that we have been wrong to place our hopes in her and the old texts. What if she has seen a bleakness in them that none of us can understand, nor are ready for? Are we forever going to continue the cycle of a short-lived peace followed by enormous threats of invasion as our ancestors have?
Ysalais is not telling me something, I'm sure of it. But it would be dangerous to openly antagonize her as she has risen to a status of "Saviour" in the eyes of the people."
